Leftover Turkey gets a Makeover with this “1-Pot Wonder” Soup Recipe

by Aprilanne on Nov.28, 2009, under California Living, Food & Wine

Thanksgiving is one holiday that is fairly universal here in the states  - meaning almost everyone celebrates this day of sharing bounty with good food, good family and good friends.  And - no surprise, our friend the turkey traditioanlly finds it’s way to our Thanksgiving tables every year - often times yielding those fabulous turkey leftovers…

I often think of my mother’s brother “Uncle Ben” who among numerous other extended family members would join us at Grandma Rose’s house for Thanksgiving diner.

About 2 hours after dinner Uncle Ben would call out “who wants a sandwich?”  When I was younger I used to wonder HOW  Uncle  Ben could be hungry so soon after eating so much.  As I grew older I realized this was part of our family’s tradition of Thanksgiving - the fun of making sandwiches on Thanksgiving after dinner  - with the leftover turkey, gravy, cranberry sauce and stuffing.

For those interested in doing more with the leftovers than making sandwiches (which I do not knock - we had that last night!)  I offer Grandma Rose’s One-Pot-Wonder” Recipe - which is as easy to make as it is delicious and healthy to eat!  Try it tonight and I will bet this dish quickly becomes your “go-to” recipe when you want to serve something quick, delicious and nutritious!

Side note:  Other than the fresh greens and herbs, most of the ingredients can be stored in your pantry making this a wonderful dish to serve last minute guests, especially when you add the olive oil and crushed rosemary garnish.   This dish is hearty enough to serve alone, or you can add some fresh french bread, and a beautiful green salad on the side - Enjoy!  Aprilanne

Do you have a unique family recipe you would like to share?  Feel free to send it along and we’ll post it accordingly!

Aprilanne’s “Best Bets” for “California Giving” this season…

by Aprilanne on Nov.19, 2009, under California Living

Have you ever seen anything cuter than this? Adopt Garnett today!

It’s a known fact in the adveritsing biz that babies and puppies sell - sell - sell!  Well, let’s add seals and marine mammals to the list of heart tugs because I have to ask - for a minimum donation of just $30.00 who could turn down a face like the sweet little one in the picture on the left ?

"Arrow" - A Marine Mammal Center success story

I worked with the Marine Mammal Center when I was a cable news reporter and did a story on “Arrow” pictured on the left - who suffered terrible injuries by -  yes,  you guessed it - an arrow.  Arrow recovered - in fact,  if you watch our PSA on the “Adopt A Seal” Program - it’s Arrow who is being released out of the cage at the surf to run to his freedom - a perfect example of how the Marine Mammal Center rescues, rehabilitates, and releases the mammals in thier care.

Now - you can “Adopt” Arrow -  as a “Poster Seal” for TMMC who represents a particular species of mammals the Marine Mammal Center cares for.

Oh - and there are many others to choose from like Garnett pictured at the top of this post, to the world famous mother and daugher Humpback Whale due “Delta and Dawn” - you can adopt the ones that appeal to you and feel good knowing your helping in the rescue and rehabilitation of our marine mammals.

Imagine the surprise when someone finds out you adopted a Seal for them!!!

“Adopt A Seal” packets include a bio and photo of your adoptee, an adoption certificate, and much more…making this act of giving a great gift to share this season - check out  the details here and enjoy this incredible season of “California Giving!”  Aprilanne

Roxy - her name says it all…

by Aprilanne on Nov.17, 2009, under Farm Life

Cute, sassy, and a ton of fun...THIS IS ROXY!!!

She was Big Red’s (our rooster’s) first love - most likely because she was the first to really develop and lay eggs.
Roxy is easy going with the other hens and has no problem stepping aside to let the other girls get some of Big Red’s attention - not like Rosie who pecks at Roxy when Red is around…who you’ll have a chance to learn a little more about next week.
So what can I say…backyard chickens really are a ton of fun - they are easy to care for, easy going, and very easy to please - unlike my 3 spoiled sheep - which is another story entirely…!
Next week - meet Rosie - AKA:  “Babe” - a cute yellow number who is a feisty, smart, “contortionist” who gets into more trouble than the whole brood put together!  Enjoy - Aprilanne

Meet BIG RED - just one of the usual supsects…

by Aprilanne on Nov.08, 2009, under Farm Life

In the first of a series of posts aimed to introduce you to our motley crew of farm critters I invite you to take a moment to…

Meet BIG RED - just one of the usual suspects you'll find on our California Farm...

Meet BIG RED - our “impostor” in the hen house (see post below) who has turned into a really sweet addition to our California Farm.”

While he is pretty cool with me - read:  “the one who feeds him everyday” - BIG RED  does find my husband’s presence somewhat of a threat (although sometimes I think it may be the other way around!)

Big Red is “king of the hen house” - and master and lord over Gracie, Rosie, and Roxy our three adorable hens.   His first love was Roxy - the black one, and now Rosie the yellow one seems to be his favorite chick - although Gracie - the white one (and the only one of Red’s same breed), seems to flirt with him all the time.  Gracie is younger than the other two and I suspect it is only a matter of time before RED realizes Gracie is a perfect candidate for mating.
All three of our hens are laying eggs now - which is very cool.  If you haven’t had farm fresh eggs - I recommend you check them out as they are so delicious and nutritious - and this is coming from someone who didn’t like eggs before this whole chicken raising process began!  Next week - Meet Roxy - RED’s first love…Enjoy, Aprilanne
Are you interested in raising backyard chickens?  Feel free to post your questions here - thanks!

Entertaining goes New England Style at Sam’s Chowder House in Half Moon Bay, CA

by Aprilanne on Nov.08, 2009, under California Living, Food & Wine, Tourism

Lewis Rossman, Executive Chef - Sam's Chowder House, Half Moon Bay, CA gets traditional with a New England Style Lobster Clambake on the beach.

Growing up on the East Coast - I had the pleasure of experiencing a few key good things in life - one of them being “clambakes on the beach” - which are probably the best experience you can have when talking about cooking and eating food on the beach.

Now, as luck would have it, I’ve discovered a special place in Half Moon Bay, CA - Sam’s Chowder House - where they do Lobster Clambakes right on their oceanfront property in large, traditional, authentic wooden steamer boxes.   You can also order the Lobster Clambake for 2 off the menu - which is beyond incredible - yet for entertaining - I think the whole idea of “let’s sit around and eat and drink while the dinner is steaming experience” Sam’s Lobster Clambakes offers on their beachfront property location is the ultimate in good living.

The basic concept is this -  each component of the meal is “layered” into the traditional wooden steamer box (a fire is going underneath it) and and a special seaweed is  layered in which keeps in the moisture so the main lobsters, clams, corn on the cob, sausage, potatoes, etc. stay moist and delicious as they steam cook.  The aromas of all the wonderful ingredients cooking sets your senses up for a memorable and tasty dining experience on the coast.
At Sam’s Chowder House - you can also arrange for a margarita bar, and a raw bar of fresh seafood such as clams and oysters on the half shell for your party to enjoy while your clambake is steaming - okay - does this sound just heavenly or what?!  You can also have the Clambake brought to you with Sam’s Chowder Mobile - now that’ service!

Catch the Bay Area's best sunsets at Sam's Chowder House, Half Moon Bay, CA

Sam’s Chowder House was recently featured on California Living prime time - which can be seen Bay Area wide with an encore airing this coming weekend - Saturday, November 14, 2009 @ 7 PM if you want to check out more of what this award winning oceanfront dining destination on San Mateo’s Coast offers!
Naturally - the best way to experience Sam’s award winning oceanfront dining is to go there - “you’ll be glad you did!”  Enjoy!  Aprilanne
