Keep the "Honeymoon Period" going when it comes to your health & fitness goals!

Beware of what in the “fitness world ” is refered to as the “Honeymoon Period” - this is the 6 week time period between New Years Day and Valentines Day. Similar to that blissful period of the Honeymoon in a marriage, in committing to a healthy lifestyle - the beginning is when there is a great deal of energy and enthusiasm.   The gyms are bustling, and we are diligently trying to eat right. So what happens? According to numerous studies - by Valentines Day, many people have fallen back into old habits, and the enthusiasm dies down.

The good news is - it only takes about *4 - 6 weeks for something to become a habit and probably less time for us to integrate something so totally that we are no longer aware of it. *Some sources indicated it can take as little as 21 days for an action to become a habit.

So how can you make your fitness commitments last beyond the “Honeymoon Period?” Below are 3 easy Guidelines for Health & Fitness Success:

1. Keep Your Expectations Real:

While it would be nice, there are no magic pills or exercises that will whip us into shape overnight.  that said we do have the CA Living:Toned -By -Tonight Workout that will make your muscles look more defined for a big night out On-Demand, and the California Living Beach Body Workout - a terrific 20 minute total Body Workout On-Demand for you to check out when time - or a lack of it is a factor in reaching your short term fitness goals.

Keep your expectations realistic - aim to loose 1-2 pounds a week. You may experience more weight loss early on - which is natural - yet the healthiest weight loss plans will not shock your body into shedding large amounts of weight in an (unhealthy) short amount of time.

The secret is balance - your fitness goals are just one part of your life - and should not consume your every waking moment - nothing should - that would be a terribly unbalanced and unhealthy way to live. Most of us have jobs, families, and many other daily commitments beyond working out. Sure there are celebrities that lose weight or “get buff” for their next film who work at it 24/7 - but unless your planning to audition to be the next “Rambo” give it a rest! Your results will come - in time! By understanding this and keeping things in perspective you will be able to work towards your goals over a longer period of time.

2. Set up a Goal and Reward System:

It is important to have goals like - “I want to be in a bikini this summer,” - or I want to run a 5K or 10K this spring.” By setting up intermittent goals along the way and rewarding yourself for reaching these goals you will keep your enthusiasm high and have mini-milestones to look forward to achieving.

For example, going 30 days without eating junk food, or going down a size in your jeans are reasons to celebrate! By setting up non-food related rewards such as a day at the spa, a shopping spree (please don’t blame it on me), or a movie night out with your friends (hold the butter & salt please!), you will feel good about your progress along the way and be less likely to throw in the proverbial towel.

3. Work in that Workout!

What happens when we say to ourselves “I’ll get to it - right after I do this…or - I’ll do it tomorrow” - the “it” usually never happens because we did not consciously plan it into our daily or weekly routine. Create a schedule that works for you - three days a week - every other day, 30 - 60 minutes everyday - Making exercise a part of your life means making it work with the rest of your life.

The beauty of exercise is you can combine it with things you love, hiking, biking, rowing, walking - I know it’s easy to say and harder to do - but seriously, try scheduling an activity you love once a week. While the winter weather presents some challenges you can swim indoors, shoot hoops, or even play a game of tennis indoors - in Cali anyway!  You can also work with a trainer and create a kick-butt workout at your local gym and combine it with a fun spin or dance class to keep it interesting. Try adding kick boxing, yoga, or Pilate’s to your routine - you’ll challenge your mind and body in different ways and meet new people who share similar interests - a great fringe benefit!

Sometimes it can take a big rain storm like the one we have been experiencing over the last few days here in the Bay Area for us to assess our emergency supplies and update them with fresh batteries, meal replacement bars, etc., in the event we may need them.

Now while it may be hard to get excited about flashlights, first aid kits, and portable radios - I offer you an easy albeit sneaky way to incorporate “emergency prepardness” supplies  into your holiday offerings this year by mixing them in with the other more tantelzing goodies in your family’s holiday stockings!

Granted, one could consider sticking bows on first aid kits and bright holiday stickers on flashlights the equivalent of putting  “lipstick on a pig” - yet this simple activity towards “Being Prepared” is ultra-easy to execute as most of the “Readiness” supplies one needs can be picked up on that last minute dash to the grocery store TODAY!

Be creative -  you can also design a “last minute” gift around a loved ones hobbies,  for instance you can go with a gardening theme and mix in emergency supplies in a flower pot with gardening tools, seeds, etc, for your elderly neighbor who loves to putter in the yard - or include an emergency travel supply kit with some car cleaning gear, and cool car gadets in a bucket for that dad who is into keeping his car in mint condition…you get the picture!

Be sure to mix in some fun stuff to balance the mood of the overall presentation…one of my sons told me getting some “money” with his emergency supplies “would be good” - which I stuck in a clear gift card holder (pictured on left)…creating  a fun and easy addition to my arsenol of holiday stocking stuffers this year!

Party Girl Diet Survival Guide Tip # 2: Enjoy Wine & Cheese in Moderation…

Party Girl Diet Survival Guide Tip #2:  Cheese and Wine are healthy for you - in moderation.

The Party Season is upon us, and for many, so is the temptation to indulge more - more often!  And while many hosts now offer “figure friendly” party food options, nothing goes quite so elegantly together as wine and cheese - it is a simple, classic, entertaining combination that will make any event a special one!

Now while there is decent evidence to support that both wine and cheese offer health benefits - the operative phrase here is “in moderation!”  Cheese contains bone strengthening calcium and muscle supporting protein - and let’s face it - cheese is yummy - so yummy it can be hard to stop at just one piece - or 1 oz. which is an actual serving of cheese!  A good “rule of thumb”  is, a portion of cheese is about the size of your thumb - or about one inch long and half an inch wide.

To make the most of your cheese endeavors the suggestions below offer some interesting tidbits to keep in mind when buying, serving, and eating cheese:

  • Make the most of your cheese serving by using a grater as shredded portions appear more substantial.
  • Lactose intolerant?  You may want to stick to firmer cheese varieties which usually have less lactose.
  • Soft, fluffy cheeses have less fat content and fewer calories than hard cheeses because they contain more water.

Did you know that in France entire courses and even entire meals revolve around cheese?  Some cheeses even taking on the role of a dessert item to be  savored with a fine glass of wine or port.

Thanks to the resveratrol properties found in the skin of the grapes that are used to make wine, there is also a strong body of evidence growing to support the claims that consuming wine in moderation offers some “cardio-protective” health benefits.  Again, the key phrase to consider when looking to include wine in your diet is “in moderation.”   An acceptable serving amount to reap these reported heart health benefits is 1 - (one)  5 oz. glass a day for women, and 1- 2 glasses for men.   Please keep in mind, no one is suggesting those who don’t drink red wine start, as you can attain the same resveratrol benefits from consuming grape juice.

Combine the ingredients below in a large bowl and then transfer to a decorative jar to keep in your bathroom.  You can simply scoop out a few cups of it to dissolve in a warm bath anytime you want to relax with a skin softening experience…ENJOY!

1/2 cup liquid honey
3 cups powdered milk
lavender buds (added for color and fragrance)

Party Girl Diet Health Tip:  This recipe for Fresh Tomato Sauce is easy, quick, and makes a tomato sauce so incredibly tasty for spaghetti, pizza, and Italian baked dishes you will never suspect it is actually good for you!

Tomatoes are a major source of the Antioxidant Lycopene which is thought to reduce the risk of Cancer by 40 % - notably prostate, lung, and stomach cancer and increase survival.  Here’s an interesting tip - concentrated tomato sauces like the ones found on pizza and in pasta sauce have FIVE time more lycopene than fresh and canned and jarred tomato sauces have THREE times more the antioxidant value of lycopene than fresh tomatoes so there is no excuse to always have this power-food on hand any time you want or need a lycopene boost!

Fresh Tomato Sauce

Compliments of Graziano Ristaurante, Petaluma, CA

1. Cut a small X on top of 4 ripe, large, on the vine tomatoes - place in boiling water (boil for approx. 2 minutes to blanch - remove from water and pull off skin - dice.

2. Place approximately 1/4 cup of extra virgin olive in a large saute pan and saute 3 large shallots, minced.

3. Once onions are clear in color - add diced tomatoes to pan - one 8 oz. glass of white wine and approximately 8 oz. of water.

4. Add 1 bunch loosely cut fresh basil and 2 tsp. each sea salt and black pepper.

5. Simmer about 2 hours - the longer it cooks the thicker the sauce will be.

Grandma Rose’s Authentic Italian Tomato Sauce:

Why do Italian’s call Red Sauce - Gravy? The answer - Red Gravy contains meat, or the meat drippings from the browned sausage, meatballs and spareribs that eventually went into the sauce to be served with the pasta of choice.

Sauce as in Marinara Sauce - does not contain meat, and therefore retains the more common name of Red Sauce. Below is a “good” approximation of what goes into Authentic Italian Gravy - yet keep in mind - you can always get in touch with your “Inner Italian” and add whatever else you might like to “Make it Your Own.”

1. Place some Olive Oil ( a few Tablespoons) in the bottom of a large Pot - add a few cloves of garlic, gently brown - remove garlic cloves if desired.

2. Add 2-3 large cans of STRAINED Plum Italian Tomatoes - discard pulp (some will dice up the pulp and add it to the Sauce for a chunkier effect).

3. Add a hand-full of diced fresh basil, a pinch of salt and pepper to taste; bring to a boil, and reduce the heat to simmer to thicken. The thicker version is used on pasta, the thinner, lighter version is used when making your baked dishes such as lasagna and manicotti.

4. Add your browned meatballs, sausage, etc. to enhance flavor as desired - When meat is warmed through it’s ready to serve. Note: The longer the Gravy simmers, the thicker it will get, so be careful not to overdo the simmering process.

FUN FACT #2 - Grandma Rose would also pour the drippings from the browned meats into the Sauce for extra flavor but stopped doing this as she got on in years once the adverse effects of too much fats and oils in the diet became more well known.

5. At the end just prior to serving - toss in a pinch of fresh Oregano - if the Oregano sits too long in the simmering sauce, it will turn the flavor bitter. Serve with your favorite pasta and our Authentic Meatball Recipe from Grandma Rose.

In California - “Outdoor Living is in” almost anytime of year, and especially when the weather starts heating up!  Whether you’re cooking up a few steaks or chicken breasts for the family on the grill, or throwing an all out BBQ party in the backyard - protect yourself and your love ones from the not-so-healthy effects cooking meat on the grill can bring by marinading your poultry, beef, pork etc. in a mixture of ingredients with healthy anti-oxidants!

Now while I’m not aiming to be a total killjoy here - it is important to report that the process of cooking meat, poultry and fish on the grill has been proven to cause the formation of carcinogens (cancer causing agents) known as HCAs (Heterocyclic Aromatic Aminies) and PAH’s (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons).

We all love to BBQ, and cooking on the grill is a quick, easy, and fun way to prepare meals - so here are a few steps you can take to decrease the cancer risk when grilling:

1. Use fruit marinades such as orange, lemon, lime, etc., and anti-oxidant rich herbs and spices such as cumin, rosemary, oregano, etc., in an olive oil base and marinate meats, fish, and poultry at least an hour before cooking to reduce carcinogenic damage up to 90%!

2. Using fresh foods such as garlic, onions, rosemary, tomatoes, etc. that contain antioxidants to protect one’s DNA from the carcinogenic damage caused by the Heterocyclic Aromatic Amines HCA’s and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons – PAHs formed when grilling meats, poultry, and fish.

3. Cooking in tinfoil to prevent the fat drippings and subsequent production of PAHs that are deposited back onto the food by smoke and flare-ups.

4. Using smaller cuts of meat so they take less time to cook; flipping frequently to promote faster cooking and prevent HCAs from forming. Ultimately you are in control when it comes to the foods you eat and prepare for yourself and your family so do take a few extra moments when grilling to include some of the ideas above to protect yourself and loved ones from the carcinogens created when grilling meat, fish, and poultry.  Carcinogen byproducts are not formed by the way when grilling vegetables - so be sure to include lots of great roasted veggies such as colorful peppers, onions, tomatoes, eggplant, and zucchini and enjoy them all completely guilt free!  Enjoy - Aprilanne

It’s Official - Crab Season has begun today and is expected to last till June 2011!   Here in the Bay Area, it is a tradition to have fresh crab available to serve over the Thanksgiving holiday, and while the crab supply last year  at this time was less than robust - it looks like this year is off to a better start.

Now while fresh crab is always delicious, Crab Cioppino is one of those seafood dishes you can serve a crowd, or make for an intimate dinner for two. Crab Cippino - is a tomato based seafood stew that in addition to fresh crab, calls for an assortment of other fish - which should be consumed at least twice a week as part of a healthy diet.

Originally crowned the ultimate “brain food,” Omega 3 Fatty Acid rich fish such as salmon, trout, and halibut to name a few offer numerous health benefits due to their Omega 3 Fatty Acid properties.

According to the Harvard School of Public Health – in addition to providing protection against heart disease and possibly stroke, higher does of omega-3 fatty acids are used to treat depression, and “new studies identifying potential benefits for a wide range of conditions including cancer, inflammatory bowel diseases and other autoimmune diseases such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.”

Omega-3 fats have been linked with health benefits such as lowering the risk of heart attack and may reduce irregular heart rhythms. Omega-3 fats work to prevent disease by regulating blood clotting and the contraction and relaxation of artery walls.  They also lower blood pressure and heart rates, improve blood vessel function, and at higher doses, lower triglycerides and may ease inflammation.

Since our bodies don’t produce Omega-3 fatty acids we need to rely on food sources containing them for numerous normal body functions, such as controlling blood clotting and building cell membranes in the brain.  It is however, always recommended that you seek to get your omega-3 from foods choices and not from supplementation.  Note of caution about supplementation - always, always, I repeat - ALWAYS check with your doctor or health care provider before taking a fish oil supplement.

So what foods can you find Omega 3-fats in?  Omega 3- fats are found in fish such as salmon, tuna, and trout, herring, halibut, and sardines, as well as Omega-3 eggs that have been fortified with DHA.  Omega-3 fats in the form of ALA’s (alph-linolenic acid) can also be found in flaxseeds, walnuts, and soybeans.  ALA can be found in olive oils, canola oils, and in dark green leaf vegetables such as kale, spinach and Brussels spouts, as well as in some animal fats such as grass-fed animals.

What about the health concerns regarding mercury and other environmental contaminants  found in some fish species?

According to JAMA - The Journal of the American Medical Association, “Overall, the health benefits of eating fish greatly out-weight the potential risks - especially when guidelines are used to reduce the small chance of being affected by these risks.”

Party Girl Survival Diet Tip #1: Avoid “Fad Diets” in Quest to Loose Weight & Feel Great…

best-cover-party-girl-dietWhile the temptation to go a “fad diet” can be strong to lose weight quickly - research consistently shows most of the weight lost is gained back again over time.  This is due in part to the fact that while people may actually lose weight on “fad-diets” these diets are not sustainable and as soon as they go off them - the weight lost comes back - setting the dieter up for what is known in the industry as “yo-yo dieting.”

Naturally your intentions to eat right, exercise, and loose weight are admirable and with adherence to the proper diet plan will ultimately deliver success.  The problem is, most “fad diets” can be disguised as “quick weight loss miracle plans” which may unfortunately set people up for failure from the get-go because they are too rigid, promise unrealistic outcomes, and/or do not have the proven scientific research behind them to support their outrages weight loss promotion claims.   So how can one distinguish between a fad-diet and a wholesome, healthy weight loss strategy? If a diet you are considering has any or all of the following components - proceed with caution:

Tell-tale Signs of a “Fad-Diet:”

1.   The diet offers inflated marketing claims of ultra-quick weight loss (more than a few pounds a week).

2.  The diet restricts certain food groups completely - “No carb” diets fall into this category which recommend you eat a diet full of health harming saturated fats in the form of eating all the full fat cheese, dairy, and animal proteins you want while eliminating heart healthy grains and legumes, and health promoting fruits and veggies.

3.  The diet requires you to consume specific foods only such as eating only grapefruits, bananas, cabbage soup, all liquids, or large quantities of fat and protein for extended periods of time for instance.

4.  The diet requires dieter to purchase specific weight loss supplements, drink powders, prepackaged foods and bars, etc. which can be an impractical  “eating lifestyle” to adhere to and/or maintain over a long period of time.

5.  The diet does not promote exercise and claims you do not need to be physically active to loose weight on the diet.

While the above list is rather abbreviated - the intention here is to get the message out to avoid “fad-diets” like the plague!  To complete the picture, below are the attributes of a healthy diet - one that will offer you the most rewards for your efforts and the best results in your quest to loose weight and feel great this season:

3 Key Attributes of a Healthy Weight Loss Plan:

1.  The diet allows you to eat all of the food groups in moderation - without limiting your intake of food groups that are proven to enhance and longevity such as fruits and vegetables, beans and legumes, whole grains, etc.

2.  The diet plan is one that you can sustain (stay on) for long periods of time - ask yourself:  “will I be able to easily stay on this diet plan for “the rest of my life?”  If the answer is “yes” you may have found the perfect diet plan for you as long as it includes the rest of the points on this list!

3.  Exercise is promoted and required daily/weekly to keep you healthy and help you burn calories in order to loose weight.

The information in the above list has also been provided in an abbreviated fashion in order to get the message of  “healthy dieting” out there, and while loosing weight is not easy for many people the following simple, tried and true weight loss formula will help you in reaching your weight loss success goals:

ENERGY IN - (minus)  ENERGY EXPENDED = CALORIES/WEIGHT LOST OR GAINED.

Calories/Energy consumed in the form of food - minus - Calories burned through exercise/activity equals = Calories/Weight lost or gained depending on whether a caloric deficit or surplus is created.

While it would be fantastic if everyone consumed a diet rich in nutrition and antioxidant rich fruits, vegetables, fish, lean protein and monounsaturated (good) fats - no matter what the calories consumed consist of - if a person of normal/average metabolism consistently expends more calories in energy (such as exercise) than they consume they will loose weight accordingly.

3,500 calories equals a pound of weight - when we burn 3,500 calories more than we have eaten we loose a pound. “Calories in - Calories Burned” = a successful weight loss strategy when you consume less calories than you burn or burn more calories than you consume.

When you live in a place as beautiful as California you have to take the good with the bad and BE PREPARED for natural disasters.” Aprilanne Hurley, California Living host, author, The Party Girl Diet

Sometimes it takes a major disaster like the horrific earthquake Japan recently experienced, and the subsequent Tsunami Warnings for California’s coast to remind us of our own vulnerability to natural disasters.

The message is simple: TAKE THE STEPS TODAY TO BE PREPARED! You’ll find there is a certain “peace of mind” that comes with ‘being prepared” for disasters – and you’ll feel good knowing that you have done all you can to protect yourself and your family against the threat of disasters.  Start with creating a Family Emergency Plan, and putting together or updating your Emergency Supply Kit today!

While you can start by just get the basics and add items little by little, the best thing is to dive in and make it happen in one power shop at the grocery or warehouse store to be sure you have the emergency supplies below, which are recommended by FEMA to have on hand to “Be Prepared:”

  • Three-day supply of non-perishable food.
  • Three-day supply of water – one gallon of water per person, per day.
  • Portable, battery-powered radio or television and extra batteries.
  • Flashlight and extra batteries.
  • First aid kit and manual.
  • Sanitation and hygiene items (moist towelettes and toilet paper).
  • Matches and waterproof container.
  • Whistle.
  • Extra clothing.
  • Kitchen accessories and cooking utensils, including a can opener.
  • Photocopies of credit and identification cards.
  • Cash and coins.
  • Special needs items, such as prescription medications, eye glasses, contact lens solutions, and hearing aid batteries.
  • Items for infants, such as formula, diapers, bottles, and pacifiers.
  • Other items to meet your unique family needs.

Chances are, if you have to evacuate immediate – there will be little time to gather additional items outside of your pre-packed emergency kit so set aside some warm clothing for each family member and bedding such as a sleeping bag for each that you can grab and go with if sheltering in place is not an option:

  • Jacket or coat.
  • Long pants.  (thermals, long underwear).
  • Long sleeve shirt. (think layers).
  • Sturdy shoes. (waterproof options plus extra socks)
  • Hat, mittens, and scarf.
  • Sleeping bag or warm blanket (per person).

Other considerations are to have on hand are a week’s worth of prescription medications on hand, extra cash, gas in your car, and cell phone charger.

Customize the above list and suggestions to suit your family’s specific needs to have what each family member needs to exist without aid for at least 3 days, diapers, formula, etc., for babies; and having board games and toys in your kit for your children will “keep the peace” and the sanity if you find yourself in a shelter.

11/16/2011, Honolulu, Hawaii/INSIDE LOOK TV, LLC - Natural Foods Chef and Author Aprilanne Hurley Teaches Mothers and Children in Transitional Village on the Island of Oahu How to Eat Healthy in her Role as a Natural Foods Chef with The First Lady’s Chefs Move to Schools Initiative.

It was all smiles and giggles  as some 30 Oahu village children gathered around Aprilanne to learn about healthy food choices as part of Hurley’s “Eat a Rainbow” nutrition program she created to teach children about making healthy foods choices through the use of color.

“We had an amazing day of learning, food, and fun,”  Hurley offers, adding, “and while all of the children were excited and thrilled to see the many colorful foods presented, the younger children got extremely excited when they saw they were going to have orange juice.  It broke my heart.”

With Weinberg Village Waimanalo’s Director Holly Holowach’s catering expertise in the kitchen - we served over 60 people a tasty recipe from The Party Girl Diet book for the main course:  Cavatelli & Broccoli. This super healthy dish was made with fresh steamed broccoli, braised dark meat chicken, chopped garlic, and curly shaped pasta to attract the Keiki’s interest.

Holowach offers, “the families at the Village really enjoyed Aprilanne’s visit.  The mothers were so attentive during her class and appreciated learning her tips on how to create healthy bodies through eating fruits and vegetables and adding more colorful foods to their diets.  The children loved the food, especially the fruit and yogurt. “

Holowach adds, “the parents are still talking about how much they liked the Chicken Broccoli pasta dish!  Several of them have read Aprilanne’s book and were so thrilled to meet her!  Mahalo to Aprilanne for coming to the village and sharing her love of healthy eating and good nutrition with our families.”“First I spent time in a classroom setting with the mothers living in the village to discuss the importance of using fresh herbs and spices to add flavor to their foods without adding extra salt, sugar, and fat.  We covered The Party Girl Diet’s Top 10 Foods for Health & Longevity, and the importance of eating breakfast, healthy fats, fruit, vegetables, and fiber.”  The health benefits of daily exercise was also emphasized.”

Hurley’s “Eat a Rainbow” Party for the Keiki (children in Hawaii) started off with a colorful “pupu platter” consisting of fresh veggies and tomato salsa.

The fun kicked into high gear with dessert - as Aprilanne launched a “hands-on” food project with the Keiki - who all thoroughly enjoyed learning how to make their own fresh fruit kabobs with a wide assortment of colorful fruits.  Honey and cinnamon was mixed into plain - non-fat greek style yogurt to create a healthy fruit dip for the kabobs.

“It was spectacular,” Hurley beams, and so rewarding to know that by the end of our “Eat a Rainbow” Keiki Party - the children tasted as many as 9 different colors through the assortment of fresh fruits and vegetables in the dishes we served.  It is interesting to note that it was the first time many of the children tasted some of the vegetables and fruits we presented - which are very common foods to us on the mainland.”

The sauce was created with extra virgin olive oil, fresh cracked black pepper, sea salt, parmesan cheese, and fresh rosemary and basil picked  from the village garden.

“I look at my nutrition work in Oahu as planting seeds for a future free of obesity,” Hurley notes.  “Even if just one mother or child takes what they have learned about healthy eating through my nutrition program to heart ~ I am one step closer to ending the fight against obesity.”
